Brand Focus : Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen is one of the first designer brands I fell in love with when I started getting into fashion.  I adore the couture feel of the collections but pieces can still be worn in everyday outfits without seeming 'over the top'.  His catwalk shows were absolutely breathtaking and when I heard of his death in 2010 I was completely heartbroken.

I've picked out my personal favourite collections and pieces for you all below.

 Spring Summer 2007

Probably the most stereotypically feminine of all his collections, McQueen included the romantic artist Goya as inspiration for his Edwardian styled collection.

Autumn Winter 2008

Autumn Winter 2008 with it's full regality is probably my favourite collection of all. Partly inspired by a trip to India, this collection referenced royalty, the military and the presence of the British Empire in India.

Spring Summer 2009

This collection saw the premiere of the digital print that I find to be so synonymous with McQueen.  Inspired by Darwin's Theory of Evolution, the models walked down a runway with a selection of stuffed endangered creatures.

Spring Summer 2010

The final collection that McQueen presented himself before his untimely death saw the breathtaking Armadillo shoes take to the runway for the first time.  Inspired by Plato's Atlantis, pieces featured more digital prints in a range of reptile skin effects.

Autumn Winter 2010

This collection of sixteen pieces, which were 80% complete at the time of McQueen's death, was shown in private to fashion editors in Paris.  The intricate embroidery and gilding that were so typical of of the designer stood out against medieval depictions of the afterlife from Hieronymus Bosch.

Something I am very excited about getting the chance to see is the retrospective exhibition 'Savage Beauty' which is coming to London's V&A museum in March 2015.  The exhibition will cover from McQueen's MA Graduate collection of 1992 to his unfinished final collection from Autumn/Winter 2010.

Find out more about the Savage Beauty exhibition here.
